Lack of Reading Habit

Did you know that reading is the window of the world? By reading, we can go around the world. Around the world doesn’t mean that you go around the world exactly. It is actually your mind and imagination that can go surround the world. Based on statistics stated by Harvard University, Indonesian people are lazy to read. So, what are some factors that make Indonesia as a laziest country to read? Here I will explain five factors why Indonesian people are lazy to read.

Laziness is something that necessary happen among society and it could be kind of everything. People in Indonesia are lack of reading habit that brings them into lack of knowledge. Lack of reading will make you do not know anything and easy to believe what appears on social media especially in this digital era. This digital era made some of society became lazy to read books so they prefer to read on internet or websites. But in fact, not all information provided are valid. Lack of reading can make people easily to be influenced by hoax information on internet.

Lack of reading of course bring us to be easily believe what appear on the media. Before we can remark this habit, first of all you should know the reason or the factors why people especially in Indonesia are lazy to read so that in the end you can be the agent of change for people around you.

First factor is the environment. Environment has big influence on people’s way of thinking and acting. This is also important thing in people’s life because the environment is indirectly affect people’s habit. If we life in a good environment, of course we can be good people too. But if we life in bad environment, it is not impossible for us to be bad too. Why this is happen? We life and interact with people surround us and that is called environment. We meet with people around us which we don’t even know well the background of the society around us. So, our mind pretend to believe that they are right because all of people around us are doing so. The real example is starting from family. If the family has culture of reading, it is very possible for us to follow their culture. We will read as the family do. But if the family do not have the culture of reading, you may be lazy to read too.

Second reason is the technology. Nowadays, the world has involving. Surely that technology also improving. We can buy gadgets easily with adorable price then we enjoy the activity provided by the gadget for example capturing photos, chatting with friends using social media and soon. Internet is also one of the thing that have influenced people’s life. We can easily find information by using search engine in the internet. Any kind of information such as articles, videos, journal, or even e-books are provided inside of the magical internet. This is called practice way of life. We can get anything that we want only by click. But, this make us influenced on something which is practice so we become lazy to do something because all things are already in the internet.

The next reason is social media. Social media sometimes attract more than books. People especially young generation are having much interest in chatting with people that are far from them by using social media such as whatsapp, messenger, kakaotalk, or something like that. Moreover, a study said that young people spend 3 to 5 hours only for having chat with another people. This is already become a habit for people and of course it’s happening in Indonesia right now. We can see that people become wasting time and that is the reason why people say that they do not have time to read books with some or hundred pages. People are having fun with their own world in social media.

Then, the other factor is bored. Some books do not have any pictures or something that has the eye catching so some people said that they do not like to read because the book is not interesting. Other reason is that the book is too thick so people are lazy to bring it or to read it even only the first page. However, people still like to read if the book is interesting and written by famous writer. Because the writer of the book can also affect the desire to read the book.

Last but not least is do not have any interest in reading. Some people do not like reading anything. They just lazy because they do not understand the content of the book or the language is too difficult to be understood by them. Other thing that may happen among people is that it is a little difficult to find the book that we want to read. For example, you are looking for specific Biology book in a library but you cannot find the right book or the necessary book. While you can browse on internet by typing the keyword then you can get all information on internet. That’s why sometimes it is hard to find the information that we are looking for in the books.

So, in conclusion the lack of reading is caused by some factors such as environment, technology, social media, bored feeling and lack of interest in books. Despite some of the factors above, it is okay to believe any information on internet but the important thing is that you should check the credible information provided by the media so you are not believe in hoax. We can be the agent of change for our future by reading and try to explore many things so that we can be the global informed citizen.
