Regretting the Dominant Narrative that the
Requirement to be Successful is to Have a Degree
(Title taken from NUDC LLDIKTI V 2019 motion)
Is 12 years of school enough for everyone to have a
successful life? Is it important for everyone to go to college in order to get
a degree? Actually, one way to get a superior job and a decent life is through
college. Nowadays, college is no less important, especially for those who will
or have graduated from school. Then, what if someone doesn’t have a degree?
Will the future be bad or vice versa or just moderate? Well, even though the
dominant narrative in Indonesia think that having a degree will make one's
future successful, but in fact is not extremely true, many people are
successful without a degree.
Opponents who agree with the dominant narrative
claim that having a degree is important and necessary to find job easily.
However, this dominant narrative is untrue. Having a degree is not necessary,
the most important thing is having a skill or more skills to be applied in daily
life and to fulfil the industrial field requirement. Having a degree such as
bachelor of economics, engineering, communications, and other degrees isn’t
that important. We are facing the 4.0 Industrial Revolution, so be lean in and
take a look at what’s behind Industry 4.0 and you will see that it has the
ability to change the status quo in the world of business in significant ways1.
The World Economic Forum in its Future of Jobs Report identified the following
as the top 10 skills required in the future, they are: Complex problem solving,
Critical thinking, Creativity, People management, Coordinating with others, Emotional
intelligence, Judgment and decision-making, Service orientation, Negotiation,
and Cognitive flexibility. This new skill set will be particularly challenging
for many employees2. So, all we need is to improve our skills based
on what have been mentioned by The World Economic Forum. We can improve our
skill by joining short courses or courses that offers around us such as work
training by the government or private company and then we can choose what skill
we want to approach so hopefully after join the training, we can easily find
job or we might be distributed by the government to work in such company.
Opponents also claim that having a degree will give
exclusive characteristics for the people and more specific knowledge with
multiple skills because in college students will learn theoretically and
practically. Yes, that is true but not that directly given to the students of
the college. The student in college have to study other things too that doesn’t
have any relation with the major or skill they want to reach. This cause wasting
time, as we can see, people who go to college spend about 3 to 7 years or even
more to study although there are also some people who can graduate earlier such
as 2.5 years for diploma and 3.5 for bachelor, it just small number of the
graduate. Nevertheless, if we learn in some courses, it only take about a month
to a year of study with internship program offered by the courses. It will be
more efficient to everyone who still looking for a job with enough salary. However,
back to the purpose of the study itself, I believe most of people will think of
the job fields to fulfil their living cost rather than studying based on what
passion they have. In this era, we have to be more realistic than ever because
future challenge will be very competitive. Despite that specific knowledge and
skills offered by colleges, we can see that our national education system has
been improving. The government has made vocational school become superior
school and be one of student’s decision after graduated from junior high school.
Vocational school in Indonesia offers many kinds of major that I believe it
fulfil the requirement of our industry in the future. Graduate students can
choose whatever they want to study. So, after graduate from vocational school,
students are no longer need to study again at university or college in order to
have a degree. Because in vocational school they will get certificate of
expertise competence based on what major they are.
The last argument advanced by the opponents who
support dominant narrative is that it is easy to find a job with a degree
rather than not and also easy to be promoted to the higher position of the job.
However, a degree is meaningless without soft skills, so all we need to do is
increasing our skills, practice more, and do more. We can learn something new
easily just by join courses or just learn by yourself because the global media
is also involving so we can get knowledge through social media, blogs, and
other platforms which provide online courses or showing tutorials of how to do
something or how to create something. The key for the successful is skills and
attitude. Degree is not necessary because it only bring you to the interview
session of the job recruitment. The job market today seeks for employee who
have skills and easy to rely on to create or process things. Beside skills, all
we need to do is having good attitude. Remember, good skills without attitude
is meaningless, so we should be in a good way and have better communication
skills. If we have good attitude and always improving, we can be promoted to
the higher position of the company wherever you work.
The dominant narrative has been influenced by the
issue that to be a successful person must have a degree or have graduated from
college. However, everything depends on the individual. Degrees will indeed
make people feel exclusive and high, but to meet the needs of industry,
especially in the era of industrial revolution like today, skills are far more
needed by companies. Furthermore, if we are able to manage our skills even if
we don't go to college, we can also succeed without a degree.
