Argumen Tentang 'Education'

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘education’?

If I hear the word education, perhaps I think of a school or college and the other things related to education such as books, materials, or even a degree. I think education also can be divided into two kind of educations, the first is formal education, second is non-formal education. The formal education is education that we get in a school or a college. While non-formal education is education such as courses or skills training institutions. Non-formal education can also mean education that we get from our parents since childhood. So, the point of education is a learning that we get either from both institution and non institution. We can get learning everywhere.

How important do you think education is?

I think education is extremely important. Education not only prepares you to get professional life but also can give you the knowledge, awareness and intellectual skills that you will need as an individual. Everything you have you can always lose them, but what you know no one can take away from you. Here I want to underline that the most important thing is that education itself, not for the things like college or university. College or university is only worth for careers that require specific degrees and pay good enough salaries to justify the debt. While the well educated people not only possesses good knowledge, but also can prosper the uneducated people. So we need education to educate people.

What do you think of the idea of all education being online?

I think both online and offline education are having their own advantages and disadvantages. I disagree about the idea of all education being online. Online education is only benefit for those who have already working or busy taking care of their family. Meanwhile for regular students, online education can be an option or one of the methods of learning besides learning in the class. So here I think education should be balance between online and learning in class. For example we get materials from online class and then we can learn in college to do the project or practice learning. However face-to-face learning is important to help the students have interaction with teachers and the teachers also know the learning progress by the students.

Does your government really care about education?

I think both central and local government in Indonesia doesn’t really care about education. Our education is still not good, especially when compared with education in developed countries like Singapore. Moreover for uneven educational problems in Indonesia. Education in remote areas is still far behind. Unfortunately, some of them haven’t been touched by the government. Meanwhile, for education in most of region in Indonesia I think there are still many problems such as curriculum problems. The government should immediately take action to change the world of education in Indonesia. Started from preparing the human resources, qualified teachers, qualified curriculum and the facilities and infrastructures. Build people for a nation would be more beneficial to the nation's own progress than physical development.

In which country do you think you can receive the best education?

I think I can get the best education in Canada. Why? In general, the system of education in Canada is not much different from Indonesia starting from the level of primary and secondary education, then education of undergraduate, then continued post-graduate education. But what distinguishes Canada with Indonesia is the regularity of its education system. The good governance system of Canadian State is showed in the educational financing system which is almost fully funded by the state. Beside that, the equitable quality of education in urban areas or remote areas is one of the factors that make Canada into the ranks of the country with the best education system in the world.
